A
group of 113 sub-Saharan migrants were rescued alive from three small
boats adrift in the Alboran Sea at the western end of the Mediterranean
on Thursday while one person died, Spain's Maritime Safety Agency said.
The agency launched a rescue operation at around 4 am to locate at least five boats that had set sail from Morocco, after receiving a call from a volunteer, sources from the organization told EFE.
"The total number of people rescued by the Guardamar Polimnia (search rescue and rescue vessel) from three boats is 114 (16 women and one dead)," the agency said in a tweet.
One of the boats was half-sunken and some of its passengers were found in the water, according to the Maritime Safety Agency.
The
rescue vessel continued to look for several other boats, while it was
unknown to which port the migrants would be transferred.
The Moroccan Navy also rescued those on board two other boats in the area.
