A
group of Twitter users filed a lawsuit against President Donald Trump
for blocking them on the social media network, alleging a violation of
their constitutional right to express their opinions.
The lawsuit, joined by the Knight First Amendment Institute at Columbia University, demands that Trump stop blocking his Twitter account.
The seven defendants contend that the president uses his personal @realDonaldTrump account to publish official government statements and, therefore, his posts should be open to opinions he does not like.
The plaintiffs argue that Twitter is a public forum similar to a park or a citizens' assembly, where free expression of opinions should not be banned.
The Constitution allows citizens "to petition their elected representatives and otherwise engage with them in a direct manner," the plaintiffs said.
"Twitter enables ordinary citizens to speak directly to public officials and to listen to and debate others about public issues, in much the same way they could if they were gathered on a sidewalk or in a public park, or at a city council meeting or town hall," the plaintiffs contend.
The lawsuit names White House spokesman Sean Spicer and communications director Dan Scavino as co-defendants.
Trump's personal Twitter account has more than 33.7 million followers.
