Chief Audu Ogbeh |
The meeting which took place in his office in Abuja featured the governing council members of Federal universities, Chief Audu Ogbeh also made it known that soon Social science causes will soon be removed from Federal Institutions of Agriculture nation wide. He directed the Federal University governing body to make it compulsory that graduations from any Agricultural related causes should be based on 60% practical and 40% theory.
He said..'' “The new agenda enjoins you to be more innovative and enterprising. In the new dispensation, every undergraduate must, and I repeat, must own a farm on campus from 200 Level. Graduation should be based on 60 per cent on practice and 40 per cent theory.
“We are training high level young farmers who, even before graduating, should have started earning a living. We should be training graduates who should be going straight into production, with credit support from their Alma-Mata, produce chicken, eggs, goats, milk, set up meat laboratories, bake bread and above all produce and sell large quantities of high quality hybrid seeds.”
Nigerians are yet to react to this recent development and as we all know their will be too many questions to this especially while is it only the Federal Universities that are involved and even if the state owned universities are later included what about the private universities that their owners spend too much money to purchase land for their institutions, in my own point of view this is a good idea towards developing agriculture in the country but the task is really too much for students, it will not be, only if the Federal government will provide all the lands that will be used for farming by the involved students, because if they are left to provide it for themselves that means this development might not yield any fruit, and then it will be a failed mission towards agriculture in the country. So my advise to the Minister is this, The Federal government should be ready to provide all the implements that is needed to achieve this wonderful idea, if by the time a students wants to start his own farm and the Federal government declines, living it for the parents of the student to go about it, that will not go well with Nigerians and such development will be tagged a failed one.
